The Anagram
FADE IN:
1 INT. KITCHEN - DAY
KALEB (25), dressed in a hoodie with the hood pulled over
his head, stands facing a kitchen counter working on
something.
A clock ticks loudly. Kaleb holds up a black, slide action
Beretta. He is wearing a black glove.
KALEB
Happy anniversary Dr. Jen.
2 INT. DOCTOR’S HOME OFFICE - DAY
Dr. Jen enters her office with a cup of coffee in one hand
and her briefcase in the other.
She sets her briefcase and coffee on her desk. Then pulls
out her laptop and carefully places it on the desk. Settled
in her chair, Dr. Jen opens her laptop to check on the day’s
appointments. She mumbles to herself.
DR. JEN
Kaleb, eleven o’clock.
She glances at the time in the corner of the screen.
3 INT. KITCHEN - DAY
Kaleb is still facing the kitchen counter. He laughs
mockingly.
KALEB
I know everything about you. Every
little humiliation that you thought
no one knew about.
4 INT. DOCTOR’S HOME OFFICE - DAY
Dr. Jen opens a patient file on her computer labeled Kaleb
Zacry and reads it.
DR. JEN
Hm. We have some work to do Mr.
Zacry.
2.
5 INT. KITCHEN - DAY
Kaleb is still standing at the kitchen counter.
KALEB
At the count of ten. One...
two...three...
To his left on the counter, a digital recorder is recording
his voice.
6 INT. GARAGE - DAY
A door opens flooding a darkened garage with light. Kaleb
stands in the doorway silhouetted holding something in front
of him. He steps in and flicks on overhead florescent lights
one of which sputters. He enters the garage.
In the middle of the garage sits a small, card table with a
laptop computer on it and a folding chair parked behind it.
Hanging on the wall behind the table is an array of
dangerous looking tools and saws.
Kaleb sets his gun and recorder on the table. He opens the
laptop.
KALEB
Okay Blake. I’m ready for you.
7 INT. DOCTOR’S HOME OFFICE - DAY
The phone rings and Dr. Jen answers it.
KALEB (O.S.)
Good morning Dr. Jen.
DR. JEN
Good morning Kaleb. You’re not
going to cancel our appointment are
you?
KALEB (O.S.)
No Dr. Jen. This is our
appointment.
DR. JEN
I would much rather see you in
person Kaleb.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 3.
KALEB (O.S.)
But I have something I want to show
you and I can’t do that in person.
DR. JEN
What do you want to show me?
KALEB (O.S.)
In a minute. Let’s talk first. I
sent you a video conference
request.
Dr. Jen sees the request and accepts it. A still picture of
Kaleb’s avatar displays on Dr. Jen’s computer screen.
DR. JEN
What am I looking at?
KALEB
My avatar.
DR. JEN
Alright Kaleb. We’ll have our
appointment this way. Today is a
special day.
KALEB (O.S.)
I know. It’s the second anniversary
of my therapy with you.
Dr. Jen smiles.
DR. JEN
You remembered. Anniversaries are a
good time for reflection. What
progress have we made in the last
year?
8 INT. GARAGE - DAY
Kaleb stands in front of the card table watching Dr. Jen on
his laptop computer.
KALEB
Well, um. Unfocused violence is
pointless?
Dr. Jen beams.
DR. JEN (ON SCREEN)
Yes, yes! So we’ve worked through
that issue. No more violence --
right?
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 4.
Also on the card table is the recorder and gun.
KALEB
You said violence was ultimately
self-destructive.
DR. JEN (ON SCREEN)
Yes I did. This is wonderful!
Dr. Jen sighs and takes a sip of coffee.
9 INT. DOCTOR’S HOME OFFICE - DAY
DR. JEN
So many others don’t understand
that concept. I try my best to
convey it, but--
KALEB (O.S.)
Dr. Jen, it makes so much sense.
How could I miss the point?
Dr. Jen looks very pleased.
DR. JEN
Oh Kaleb, you are an exceptional
patient. We’ve had our
difficulties, but I’m thrilled at
your break through.
KALEB (O.S.)
Yes, learning to focus aggression
is a big break through.
Dr. Jen sets her coffee cup down and stares perplexed at
Kaleb’s avatar.
DR. JEN
Focus? No, Kaleb, we don’t focus
aggression, we defuse it. Remember?
10 INT. GARAGE - DAY
DR. JEN (ON SCREEN)
Remember?
KALEB
No Dr. Jen, you’re wrong. Sometimes
savagery is necessary. It just
needs to be channeled.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 5.
Kaleb starts to pull off his hoodie and walk to the other
side of the card table.
DR. JEN (O.S.)
Kaleb (beat), what are you
planning?
11 INT. DOCTOR’S HOME OFFICE - DAY
Dr. Jen grabs her chest and gasps.
On the screen is BLAKE (25) sitting with a gun pointed at
his temple. The gun is held by a gloved hand.
KALEB (O.S.)
There’s this guy, Blake. He needs
killing. I’m gonna kill him.
12 INT. GARAGE - DAY
BLAKE
Why... Why’re you doin’ this?
KALEB (O.S.)
You know why.
Blake takes a deep, shaky breath. He starts to turn his head
toward the voice but the gun pushes his head back facing
forward.
BLAKE
You don’t even know me.
Kaleb laughs mockingly.
KALEB (O.S.)
I know everything about you. Every
little humiliation that you thought
no one knew about.
Blake’s mouth falls open.
BLAKE
I’ve never met you. How could
you...
Kaleb laughs again more harshly.
KALEB (O.S.)
I’ve been close to you for years --
unnoticed but close.
6.
13 INT. DOCTOR’S HOME OFFICE - DAY
DR. JEN
Kaleb, you can’t kill Blake. You’ll
end up hurting yourself. You know
that don’t you?
KALEB (O.S.)
He’s a sniveling wimp. He lets
people wipe their feet on him like
a human doormat. He deserves to
die.
Dr. Jen bolts from her desk and paces nervously in front of
her curtained picture windows.
DR. JEN
Blake is not the problem, you --
KALEB (O.S.)
He’s gotten away with his nice guy
act for years. It makes me sick.
It’s time to get rid of this, this
half man.
14 INT. GARAGE - DAY
Blake’s face glistens with sweat.
DR. JEN (O.S.)
You must know at some level that
this isn’t the answer Kaleb
BLAKE
OK! OK! I’ll make amends.
KALEB (O.S.)
Oh really. Are we gonna go out to
dinner at that great Italian place
on 3rd St?
Blake looks hopeful.
BLAKE
Sh, sure we can. You can order
anything you want. It’s on me. They
have great pastas.
KALEB (O.S.)
Good. I think I’ll go there after
this is over and celebrate. What’s
their specialty? Meatballs?
7.
Blake gulps hard.
15 INT. DOCTOR’S HOME OFFICE - DAY
Dr. Jen looks desperate.
DR. JEN
Blake hasn’t intentionally--
KALEB (O.S.)
Doesn’t matter.
Dr. Jen shoves her chair back, stands and starts to pace.
DR. JEN
Kaleb, you’re still very ill. You
need more help than I can give
KALEB (O.S.)
No, no. I’m almost cured. Just this
one last thing.
16 INT. GARAGE - DAY
KALEB (O.S.)
When Blake’s gone I’ll be fine.
BLAKE
Ple-e-e-ase.
KALEB (O.S.)
Enough! Aren’t you bored with this?
I’m bored with it.
BLAKE
You can’t... You can’t really do
this!
KALEB (O.S.)
At the count of TEN! One...two...
Blake squeezes his eyes shut, face twisted with fear.
KALEB (O.S.)
three...
8.
17 INT. DOCTOR’S HOME OFFICE - DAY
Dr. Jen stops in front of the computer.
DR. JEN
STOP KALEB.
Kaleb pauses his counting. Dr. Jen braces her hand on the
desk and leans close to the computer.
DR. JEN
This act won’t cure you. In fact,
it indicates that you are still...
KALEB (O.S.)
Yes it will!
DR. JEN
I can’t let you do this. You need
to be hospitalized.
She reaches for the phone.
KALEB (O.S.)
NO. NO HOSPITAL!
Suddenly the computer screen goes blank.
Dr. Jen drops the receiver.
DR. JEN
Wait! Kaleb, come back!
She frantically tries to re-start the video conference.
18 INT. GARAGE - DAY
KALEB (O.S.)
four...five...
There is a beep. The gun at Blake’s head wavers
KALEB (O.S.)
six...
Blake opens his eyes.
A request to open a video conference from Dr. Jen displays
on the computer screen. Blake ignores it.
(CONTINUED)
CONTINUED: 9.
KALEB (O.S.)
...seven...eight...
There is silence. Blake opens his eyes.
(THE CAMERA SLOWLY PULLS BACK FOR A REVEAL)
Blake sits holding the revolver to his head with the
recorder sitting on the table beside the laptop.
He places his hand on the recorder and shakes it gently.
FLASHBACK:
19 INT. KITCHEN - DAY
Kaleb is facing the kitchen counter with the recorder on the
counter to his right recording his voice.
A "low battery" message flashes on the recorder monitor.
KALEB (O.S.)
...seven...eight...
The recorder beeps and clicks and the display goes dark.
KALEB (O.S.)
...nine......TEN!
BACK TO SCENE:
20 INT. GARAGE - DAY
He lowers the gun and looks straight ahead. His expression
changes from fearful to threatening.
BLAKE
(in Kaleb’s voice)
You got lucky Blake. But, there’s
always another day -- PAL.
FADE OUT:

This is a psychological thriller where Blake is being held at gunpoint while Kaleb celebrates his anniversary with Dr. Jen.
